The local media were awash with items on Hypebeast. What kind of beast is it?
Scary as the name sounds, it actually was about fashion.
And so it appears to reflect how things are. As Alexander McQueen said, “It’s a new era in fashion – there are no rules. It’s all about the individual and personal style, wearing high-end, low-end, classic labels, and up-and- coming designs all together”.
Fashion trends have become a part of every people’s life and what is in is what most teenagers want to be identified with for they want to belong. It has become sort of a cancer of the society where most of us are judged by the way we dress. If one wears not so fancy clothes, he or she is judged by most people to belong to the lower class of citizens. If one, however, wears fancy branded clothes he or she hears words like “gold digger,” “jejemon”, “misfit”, etc.
Hypebeast is what teenagers are now fond of. It all started 13 years ago in the bedroom of a Chinese, Kevin Ma, in Vancouver, Canada, where he was studying at the University of British Columbia. He initiated a street wear blog which he called Hypebeast where fashion can be updated on a daily basis. This caused the boom of clothing blogs all over the world.
In an interview with Police Senior Inspector Maila B. Aloy, Department Chief Police Community Relations Unit, he said that it all started in a fashion magazine here which attracted viewers that idolized the style, a mixture of emo and class A styles that millennials love.
So a group was born here in Baguio calling themselves Hypebeast. It is composed of young individuals, aged 11 to 18 years old and believed to have caused physical injuries to a student because of the jacket he was wearing. This was broadcast by ABS-CBN Baguio.
The person who leads the group is business minded. He imitates the design of clothes from Supreme Co., Bape, etc., and sells these only to the group’s members. This is part of the initiation into membership with the group. And if he or his members see a person wearing similar clothes like jackets or pants not purchased from them, they bully him or her which can include the inflicting of physical injuries.
It appears that many teenagers want to join this kind of group for it gives them the feeling of being in, or to belong, or to be secure.
The authorities are investigating these activities so the future of our youth will not be bleak and the police warned them not to wear such clothes
Mayor Mauricio Domogan, also appealed to the parents to continue to do their duty of teaching their children the correct values, discipline and the character that they need. They should be engaged in worthwhile activities to keep them away from troubles or vices.** By Ralph Kipol T. Sad-en, UB Intern
