LAMUT, Ifugao- – Municipal and barangay officials and workers of this town conducted an anti-dengue operation in four barangays in efforts to help rid the places of mosquitoes.
Called “Operation Pattug,” they conducted information, education and education campaign (IEC) on the prevention and control of the dengue disease, and provided drum covers after doing vector surveillance by searching and destroying the breeding places of the mosquitoes causing the dengue disease in Barangays Bimpal, Pugol, Poblacion East and Poblacion.
Led by Municipal Health Officer Dr. Rhodora Millano, the group in their IEC told the people in the different communities not to wait until they become victims before they act. They should do their share by helping search, clean and destroy the breeding sites of mosquitoes and also to share this announcement to other people so they can start cleaning, do proper garbage disposals of bottles, used tires, empty cans, broken containers and other that can be used by the mosquitoes to breed.
They also called on the barangay officials to strictly implement the ordinance on solid waste management and encouraged all school officials to take the lead in cleaning their schools now, and not to postpone until tomorrow, on Saturday or on the next day.
During the activity, the group found out solid waste materials like bottles, empty cans, plastic bottles, tires and old furniture that can gather and store water scattered in the different households.
They also noted the problem of potable water sources which are about 1-2 kilometers away from their houses. Household use big water containers catch rain water for daily consumption and most of these drums, pails and containers are uncovered hence susceptible as breeding places of mosquitoes.
As a precaution and advice to prevent being victims of the dengue, they reiterated to the different households to search and destroy the mosquitoes’ breeding areas, cover all their water containers, use self-protective measures like long sleeves or pants when going to work or school, seek early consultation when the symptoms occur for diagnosis and appropriate treatment and not to self-medicate. **JDP/DBC- PIA CAR, Ifugao
