LAGAWE, Ifugao– Modern meets traditional yet again as Ifugao textile made its way to the international scene highlighting local weaving in the Southeast Asian Region.
Sky Weavers, an Ifugao-owned start-up that works with local weavers and tailors, showcased clothing pieces and accessories using traditional textile during the Tenun Fashion Week in Sarawak, Malaysia from October 15-17, 2021.
A collection of streetwear and office wear incorporating Ifugao traditional fabric featured the Sky Weavers’ stint at the Tenun Fashion Week, which aims to highlight the cloths woven by women in rural communities of Southeast Asia.
The Tenun Fashion Week not only promotes the livelihood of weaving communities across ASEAN but also redefines the relevance of traditional textile in today’s fashion.
This event that puts forward intercultural collaboration and contact among communities in Southeast Asia featured a total of 45 participants from Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam.
Aside from the Sky Weavers, N. Ardaniel’s Loomweaving and Al Jamelah Weavers Association, Narda’s Handwoven Arts and Crafts, Salngan Livelihood Multi-Purpose Cooperative, Riverland Farmers and Weavers Communities, and Rurungan sa Tubod Foundation also represented the country in this event.
