BAGUIO CITY (PIA) — Motorists are reminded to take all the necessary pre-cautions when passing thru the scenic Kennon Road.
The Metro Baguio – La Trinidad – Itogon – Sablan – Tuba – Tublay Development Authority (MBLISTTDA) has approved the re-opening of Kennon Road to light vehicles only effective July 31, 2024, following the impact of typhoon Carina that enhanced the habagat causing series of landslides and rock fall along the road network last week.
“Upon the recommendation of the Department of Public Works and Highways-Cordillera, the MBLISTT Council approves the opening of Kennon Road to light vehicles effective July 31, 2024,” the MBLISTTDA said in a public advisory.
Baguio City Mayor and MBLISTTDA Council Chairperson Benjamin Magalong gave the order to ease travel to and from the BLISTT area and traffic along other major thoroughfares.
Kennon Road initially closed due to several mudslides at Sitio Kaipilan in Barangay Camp 3 and a soil collapse along Millsite, Camp 6 in Barangay Camp 4 in the municipality of Tuba, Benguet on July 23, 2024 during the height of Typhoon Carina and the enhanced Southwest monsoon.
A massive landslide occurred at the Millsite in Barangay Camp 4 that caused the total closure of Kennon Road. It was initially cleared over the weekend, and the road was reopened for local residents only.
Meanwhile, the DPWH-CAR reiterates that the opening of the Kennon Road is limited to light vehicles only and users must take all precautions.
A one-way traffic scheme is being implemented at a section at Camp 6 in Tuba due to an ongoing project.
“With safety being our top priority, we therefore advice motorists to exercise extreme caution in passing through the recently cleared sections (of Kennon Road),” the DPWH-CAR said in a separate road advisory.
Heavy vehicles and other motorists are advised to take the alternate routes- Marcos Highway or the Asin – Nangalisan – San Pascual – La Union Boundary Road. Kennon Road, with a length of 33.7 kilometers from Baguio City to Rosario in La Union, is the shortest route from the BLISTT areas to Metro Manila . **RMC PIA-CAR
