LA TRINIDAD, Benguet, March 23 (PIA) — The organization of La Trinidad-based cancer patients and survivors dubbed as the Ribbons of Hope, held its first forum for the year last March 10 at the Strawberry Hall of the Benguet State University(BSU) here in effort to enhance understanding of cancer.
Medical Oncologist Dr. Karen C. Tadeo of the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center (BGHMC) extensively discussed Cancer Management and Survivorship to 81 cancer patients, survivors, BSU employees, nutrition and nursing students. She explained management modalities such as surgery, chemotherapy and radiation.
A survivor has to contend with physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs, so standards of survivorship care were also tackled. It includes prevention and surveillance of new and recurrent or second cancers, assessment of late psychosocial and physical effects, intervention for consequences of cancer and treatment as well as medical problem, symptoms, psychological distress, financial and social concerns.
The lecture included management options for anxiety, depression and distress, possible impairment of some cognitive function and cancer related fatigue which are highly possible among survivors.
Survivors are advised to achieve and maintain a healthy body weight, engage in an active and regular physical activity, maintain a healthy diet high in vegetables, fruits, whole grains yet low in sugar and fat, limit red meat and avoid processed meat, minimize alcohol intake and avoid tobacco products.
Councilor Horacio Ramos Jr. who chairs the Sangguniang Bayan Committee on Health, gave updates on the proposed ordinance institutionalizing a comprehensive health care support program for cancer patients and survivors in the municipality and other related ordinances.
The forum ended with a meeting of the Ribbons of Hope members where they agreed on membership fees, annual dues, mutual aid and plans for the year.
Cancer patients and survivors who are interested to join the group can contact 09082118688 or 09214182126.
The Ribbons of Hope was organized primarily to inspire other patients and survivors in particular and the community in general. It is committed to serve as the municipality’s partner in cancer-related programs with the end view of enhancing awareness, understanding and acceptance of cancer so that appropriate information is given to and proper management modalities can be decided upon by whoever is confronted with the illness. It welcomes invitations for sharing or lectures/fora at the barangay, institution or agency levels.
The series of activities conducted since the first cancer forum in June 2017 were made possible with support from the La Trinidad municipal government led by Mayor Salda, Councilor Ramos, Ms. Anna Ota-ot and Laarni Dagas as well as lecturers and other partners such as BSU, Minda’s Buddies and donors such as Rise & Brew, Valley Bread and Cranberry. **JDP/MAWC – PIA CAR with reports from Dr. Imelda Degay- BSU)
