BAGUIO CITY – After a fruitful life spanning 9 decades, former Baguio mayor and retired Regional Trial Court judge Braulio Dacanay Yaranon passed on Monday morning, May 15, of natural causes.
Born in Aringay, La Union on April 16, 1927, the young Braulio graduated elementary grades at the Aringay Central Elementary; at the La Union High School and went on to the University of the Philippines for Associate in Arts which he finished in 1949; and Bachelor of Laws and Letters from 1950 to 1953.
From January to June 1954, he was confidential assistant and public relations officer at the office of the mayor, and as a bar passer, became city secretary from Jun 1954 to 1959.
He ran for an elective position, won and was city councilor in January 1960 to Sept. 1963; and vice-mayor from January 1964 to Sept. 1967.
He practiced law from 1968 to 1980, with additional duties as accredited voluntary arbitrator for court supervised mediation of litigation; and was appointed Municipal Trial Court (MTC) judge in the city from June 1980 to Feb. 1987; and as Regional Trial Court (RTC) judge up to his compulsory retirement in April 16, 1997, at age 70.
He became city councilor in June 30 2001 to June 30, 2004, and elected as city mayor, beating the incumbent Bernardo Vergara, with platforms of good governance and clean environment.
He was 77 when he assumed office, earning the tag of “Lolo Mayor.”
He was the son of Agaton Rulloda Yaranon, former assemblyman and governor of La Union and Gregoria Padilla, a public school teacher, both deceased. Yaranon is survived by wife Lilia Guirnalda Yaranon, son Agaton, a medical doctor; Brenda Bona, an urban and regional planner; and Ma. Mylen Victoria, an architect and licensed environmental planner. A son, Raul, died earlier.
Yaranon’s remains could be viewed at Funeraria La Paz until May 21, Sunday. The next day, a funeral mass will be celebrated at 9 AM at the Baguio Cathedral, and internment follows at the Baguio Cemetery.** juliegfianza
