BAGUIO CITY (PIA) — The Mines and Geosciences Bureau-Cordillera Administrative Region (MGB-CAR) reiterates to local government units and communities to remain vigilant for possible occurrence of landslides, floods or debris flows in their respective areas of responsibility with the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat currently affecting the region.
As of July 27, 2025 MGB-CAR Geohazard Threat Advisory, there are listed 623 barangays in the region that are at risk of rain-induced landslides or flood based on various threshold values.
Abra has the most with 294 barangays, closely followed by Benguet with 254 barangays. Mountain Province has 50 barangays at risk, 17 in Kalinga, 10 in Apayao and two in Ifugao.
Those in the barangay listings could exceed the normal amount of cumulative rainfall brought about by the habagat. The continuous heavy and prolonged rains could trigger landslides caused by the saturated condition of the slopes and soil.
The MGB explained that barangays even if not in the list If located at the foot of hill slopes with previously reported ground cracks, around areas of old or active landslides, along road cuts and road easements where slopes have been modified, and other landslide- prone areas also face the risk of landslides.
The public is encouraged to be aware of the geohazards in their respective areas by checking out MGB maps that are uploaded in online platforms such as DOST-PHIVOLCS’ HazardHunterPH (hazardhunter.georisk.gov.ph).
Meanwhile, the MGB provided some tips to stay safe. During heavy rains, stay alert. Keep watch over areas near slopes, rivers and drainage. Report any sign of soil movement, cracks and fast rising water to barangay officials and other authorities. **PIA CAR
