BAGUIO CITY – The council committee on health and sanitation, ecology and environmental protection headed by Council Elaine Sembrano will conduct a public hearing on proposed ordinances on Feb. 21 starting at 9 AM at the City Hall mutipurpose hall.
Included in the forum is the proposed ordinance by the lady councilor as to the designation of April 22 and June 5 as carless days in Baguio. The action is in consonance with the celebration of earth hour on April 22, June as environment month with world environment day on June 5. The goal of improving air quality would be realized with a day’s less vehicle exhaust released into the environment, it was known.
The preservation of century and heritage trees in the city as proposed by Councilor Leandro Yangot, Jr. featuring urbanization shall also be discussed in the forum. As defined, century or heritage trees may be individual large trees which are “unique and irreplaceable,” with “biological, cultural, ecological, and historical interest due to age, size, and condition.”
Coucilor Leandro Yangot, Jr. has also authored a proposal establishing a city government crematorium in the city of Baguio; including the appropriation of funds for the purpose. Eight of his colleagues co-authored the proposed ordinance.
A silencer to eliminate noise from automobiles and motorcycles with excessive sounds is proposed through an ordinance by Vice Mayor Edison Bilog and Councilor Yangot, Jr., co-authored by all the councilors.
Lastly, Councilor Sembrano has proposed for establishments in the Central Business District (CBD) to incorporate green zones in their business areas “to promote an environmental-friendly CBD” and an “act of support to air quality improvement.” Plants are scientifically acknowledged as air sanitizers, absorbing pollutant Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and releasing human needed Oxygen (O2).
All proposals shall be discussed during the forum, with the city council acting on final matters as to public interest. The public input shall be considered in the approval or rejection of each proposed ordinance. ** juliegfianza
