Traditionally, the month of June is the start of the rainy season. But things might be different now. It won’t hurt however to prepare as if June was still the start of heavy rains, landslides, floods, and the traditional diseases that come with the wet part of the year.
As had been said again and again, climate change has caused the rains to be stronger and the wet season might be much longer or shorter. Whatever it will be it is best to prepare for the worst.
While government agencies might be trumpeting the preparations they are undertaking to keep you safe and warm when the storms come roaring, the rule of thumb in this country is to rely on yourself and family. You might end up calling 911 and its equivalent but there would be many others doing the same. Who will get the help will surely be a matter of luck,
There will be volunteers, God bless their souls, but they will also have their families to think of.
So you have to prepare, just in case. First thing is to have the basic necessities. A flash light, a radio that can operate on batteries, drinking water, medicines, some food in case you will be marooned for some days, cellphones with fully charged batteries, a rope, etc.
Secondly, you must know what to do. Basic swimming skills is a must in flood prone areas. You also must know how to operate whatever equipment you have for emergencies. If you have a two way radio, then you should know how to use it. If you expect to utilize a rope, then know how to maximize its use. Good thing is, in this Internet age, you can learn anything by accessing cyberspace.
Thirdly, note that in preparation, the most basic are often forgotten. Take for instance the phone numbers of institutions you might just have to call like hospitals, the fire department, public utility companies, etc. How many homes have such a list in a very convenient place like where the landline phone is located? Not so many, and yet these are so basic needs.
Lastly, your roof should not be blown away. If you cannot afford some expensive prepping, then there are always stones or anything of weight that you can bring up to your roof.
Thus in the midst of frolicking in the sun which is what summer is about, let us not forget that it will not be long before the typhoons come roaring.**
