The alliance between Bongbong Marcos and Sarah Duterte is very ominous of another dark age in our history. For them, it was perfect. Uniting votes of the supposed solid north, the Dutertes’ southern clout and those in the middle who are agog due to the Imelda or Romualdez factor is supposed to mean an unbeatable team.
The big question is, did somebody enter the alliance with malice aforethought? It is still fresh in our minds that the Supreme Court is packed with appointees of the incumbent President. There is a comfortable number of them (not even including one or two who are of the “anybody but Marcos” mold) so the body could decide to order the disqualification of BBM as a candidate after his proclamation with Sarah Duterte. If that will happen, who do you think will ascend to the throne?
But what do all these have in store for us? With or without any traitor to the group, things bode bad for us. Anybody can get away with anything, even mass murder, would be the lesson to be delivered. So many will then have the idea that as long as one could be in power for a very long time, or for eternity, everything would be fine. It is the best argument for maintaining dynasties. No care for morals or ethics. The only thing important is being in power?
Stealing? Power justifies the means. There is no such a thing if power is maintained for generations. Partly, because the Filipino memory is faulty.
The people can be exploited to the hilt, or blatantly lied to, and all of these would be forgotten. Just brainwash them enough—easily done through the mass media, most of which have never been paragons of virtue in the first place.
So whatever happens, we will need the light, lots of it for the millions and millions of Filipinos. Sadly, where will it come from? From you and me.**
