With the way the President is being so slow, he and his family might be courting being exiled again just like how things went in 1986. Definitely he would not like his family to be driven out again from Malacanang Palace.
Looking at how discontented the people are with the billions and billions of their money being wasted on ghost flood control projects– actually on all government projects– the people just might say anybody but. . . . “Maski sino na lang huwag lang Marcos o ang kanilang pamilya.” That would be tantamount to handing the presidency to Sara Duterte on a silver platter. She definitely would love that. And her first order would be to jail the Marcoses except Imee. Is the President waiting for that to happen? Definitely not. So what is up his sleeve?
Will he take the track his father took in 1972, to declare Martial Law or any other strategy similar to that and send to jail whoever raises a howl or even just a whimper of opposition? I don’t think the people will take that sitting down. But that was the situation in 1972. Just before Martial Law was declared, the major papers bannered a meeting of the respected opposition politicians where they supposedly mapped out their strategy to deal with such. Suddenly, they all woke up in jail, helpless. And there they remained for a long time. They were outsmarted. Period.
Will that happen again? Our bet is the President will not take that risk. But we can never tell. He might be that stupid or that smart.
The more likely thing is he is cooking up something. It is not yet apparent but it will soon manifest in upcoming events. Chances are, he will take the better choice. That is, he will be serious about honest-to-goodness investigations of big-time corrupt people and then send an acceptable number of them to jail. We think that is the only way of assuring their extended family will not again be sent into exile. And, by golly! That is the only way this country can be saved.**
