Job requirements have always been absurd. Sometime ago, a supermarket in Baguio had an open cashier position. Outside, the hiring notice required an accountancy degree and a few years of experience. Now, a parking operations assistant, also requires a college degree. It was only right that the city received the complaints sent their way.
There is a glaring discrepancy in the requirements of these lower positions compared to the top jobs in the nation. We require so much and even excessively for mere cashiers, dishwashers and people who collect parking fees, but when it comes to the top government jobs, experience and skills be damned, you only need a good last name.
We are placing our unyielding expectations in the wrong place. We do not help the workforce get younger and transition by being so uptight. And so long as we remain blind to these nepo hirings in top positions then our government will always remain as an institution of incompetence.
To hire a younger person for a job is not a scary thing. The nightmare lies in a role responsible for countless lives being given to a buffoon. **
