When told last November that he had to undergo thrice-a-week dialysis throughout life, taxi driver Genaro Karganilla took time to accept his fate, and having to work hard to raise the costs of maintaining his expensive treatment.
Last week, however, his common-law wife Elna pleaded for help, asking media publication of her husband’s predicament to enable people to help him hurdle another financial challenge threatening discontinuance of his dialysis.
Recently, the patient was told that his arteriovenous fistula created by surgical procedure connecting an artery with a vein to enable him to undergo dialysis has been occluded or blocked/
Karganilla now needs about P20,000 to have his fistula restored through a procedure called “ballooning” to remove the occlusion and enable him to continue his life-time dialysis.
“We are in no position to raise the amount needed as we are already preoccupied with the need to sustain his thrice-a-week hemodialysis treatment costing P2,400 per session,” Elna said.
The couple is blessed with two children – 9-year old Carl Juaquin, and four-year old Jenillan Kate.
“The members of the family are very concerned with the welfare of the client but can not do anything but to seek help from other agencies since they can not afford to provide (for) his medical treatment,” social welfare officer Shirley Casallo said in a social case study report she prepared.
