Campus journalists of the Benguet State University’s (BSU)- the Mountain Collegian (MC) bagged numerous awards during the 12th School Press Advisers’ Movement (SPAM), Inc.- National Media Conference held in the City of Angeles last September 12-14.
With the theme “Embracing integration in a borderless society and in cyberspace through campus journalism” a total of 539 campus journalists from 53 different participating schools convened to advocate responsible journalism.
“You don’t just provide information but a current information, not just news but a balanced news, and not just campus journalism but responsible campus journalism,” enthused Richard Briones, current president of SPAM, Inc. during his opening remarks.
In relation, campus journalists attended diverse competitions and lectures by journalism practitioners. Among them were Makoi Popioco from CNN Philippines, Pia Arcangel from GMA 7, and Liam Nami Buam from Rappler.
On the other hand, in the individual category journalism competition, Chamanei Elias grabbed the first place in lead writing Filipino and Desiree Esteban for fourth place in editorial writing Filipino. Also, Romulo Obillo Jr. and Dine Yve Daganos landed seventh place for sports writing Filipino and ninth place for editorial cartooning English. respectively.
Moreover, MC the official student publication of BSU emerged as the champion for collaborative creative magazine publishing. Likewise, Paul Joseph Nuval the school paper adviser landed first place in copy editing.
Furthermore, the campus paper was first place in broadsheet and seventh in tabloid and newsletter.
