On the last part of the speech, he said that he was hopeful of our future because of 110 million reasons. That means you and me.
But if we just sat down or slept all day, that hope would quickly become a big disappointment. We have to work hard to improve our lives, ourselves and families for some benefit to redound to our nation.
If we became a big disappointment, then we will be nothing but 110 million liabilities. If you are just an “istambay” – no job and no initiative to create an employment for yourself—good luck. You will be the same or in the same situation no matter how many Pilippine presidents would have delivered their inaugural addresses.
What we are saying here, is what we had been saying all along. Don’t pin your hopes or future on the promises of politicians. For in the end, you will have to rely on your effort and resources. You will have to produce the money for expenses when your wife gives birth, or when you or other members of your family get sick.
If you are one of those who had been campaigning for a presidential candidate as if your life depended on it, or as if you would be appointed as a member of the cabinet, we are sorry that you might not even be qualified for the lowliest jobs in the bureaucracy. To be blunt, you don’t even have enough brains for that.
For us not to be looked at as that stupid, let us exert effort for ourselves, our families. Automatically, that means our being useful to the country. That is being patriotic. That is having common sense.**
