Even if we had Autonomy today, it will still take a long time before we start reaping the benefits of our so-called self-determination. There will be a lot birth pains to surmount due to imperfections in our social systems. It will take a long time before we can come up with meaningful changes that work. A lot of hit and miss will happen and innumerable things will need some debugging in the actual world.
It is easy to come up with theoretical solutions that will seem “doable” but during implementation, innumerable changes will be needed. For anything about people and the institutions we come up with are never perfect. There is no such a thing as a one-size fits all. And as time moves on, adjustments have to be made. Our dynamism is never limited. We always come up with something new. We are unique, and we will still be tomorrow.
Yet we have to start somewhere, the sooner the better. Having an autonomous set up should be a good starting line no matter how imperfect it might be. That would be better than always dreaming of a perfect system or setup that will never come. It would be tantamount to not beginning at all.
While it will take so many generations before the benefits of self-determination will be realized, it is better to have that dream when we will be masters of the utilization of our resources. With it will come the proper institutions to make things happen. With a good dream will mean a good actualization.
If from the get-go we say that would be impossible, then it will be. Changes, however, are bound to happen. The naysayers today can turn up to be yes people next year or thereafter.
As we struggle bit by bit towards the dream, we should be welcoming of the changes that continue to happen. They will keep coming, and then the dream.**
