This day, June 19, is the birthday of our national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal. It is a convenient time given that just some days ago, were the first day of classes for many kids. Let us remember that Dr. Rizal emphasized the importance of youth and education for a brighter future.
Fast forward to 2026 and reports came out that classrooms were not ready with only a few days/weeks before the first day of classes. Teachers forked out cash for necessary classroom supplies. Some classrooms were still flooded. With rooms rendered unusable, our children’s proper education is at risk.
We have had millions wasted due to the senate’s fiasco. All while these classrooms were falling apart. More millions are being wasted.
Education of the youth is something that was supposed to drag us out of this mud. But now education is targeted. Curricula are being mangled. Humanities courses are being sacrificed for the sake of producing more employees, and less of thinkers.
Earlier graduation is the priority for more potential recruits to fill the needs of corporate machineries.
The attack on the humanities subjects is an attack on free thinking. Right now, the future looks bleak.**
