A favorite idea this time of year was what was behind that Greek story on Pandora’s Box. It contained all the bad things—pestilence, all kinds of diseases, misfortune, bad attitudes like back-biting, vindictiveness and all sorts of negative attitudes– that could spread all over to afflict earthlings like us.
One time, the Olympic Goddess Pandora left the Box unattended. Somebody, an ordinary folk like us, saw it. Foolhardy that he was, like everybody else, he opened the box and out flew all those bad things. But with all those things flew out a tiny creature almost unnoticed. Her name was and still is HOPE. She was the antidote to all those bad things.
All the contents of the Box spread around like wild fire afflicting everyone. Is this not obvious? Everybody notices the bad things but almost all but a few became aware of that teeny weeny creature, HOPE. Tiny but potent she can be immediately utilized for free. Those who could not see or recognize Her spend their lives and energy until their deaths just bitching about.
Inherent in HOPE is positive thinking. The thinking that something good or nice and interesting will be found or will manifest itself just around the bend. Chances are, it often would.
Those who are so immersed in negative thought would not even notice the cat stealing their lunch just a foot away.
This New Year let us be thankful and start spreading the news about HOPE who is always just there lurking in the corner.**
