Mountain Province used to be the top-notcher when it came to election spending which was inclusive of buying votes. Thus, there was a politician there who even castigated contractors of infrastructure projects for doing the job right. The politico who shared with the booty (kickback) wanted a substandard performance so the project will be destroyed in a very short time and it would be done again. The contract for that will be cornered again by the politico’s henchmen. So another kickback, a considerable part of which will be used to buy votes again in the next political polling exercise.
Sadly, such state of affairs is now true all over this region as the provinces caught the bug. For the bug results in big money in the bag.
Relying on karma as a natural retribution for the wrong done to us—the misspending of our money stolen from the government through kickbacks and substandard public works– is it does not deter its repetition again and again.
And we cannot also say we are innocent about the whole thing. The fact is, we are complicit with the anomalies committed by politicos as we voted for them in the first place.
How can we absolve ourselves then? This time around, let us go beyond the money. Even if you received or will receive some, don’t go by what the money was intended for. Instead, do the right thing. Vote for those who are really worth voting for.
Let us also go beyond our petty selves or interest. Let us vote not just for ourselves. Let us vote for those who will take care of the interest of the greater majority.
That would be the only way to prevent, or at least minimize, substandard public works, corruption and general inefficiency and incompetence in the government service.
It is a good place to start to clean up the muck all over our society. Remember this on May 9. **
