A supporter had given time, effort, saliva and material resources for a winning candidate’s campaign.
What would he get in return? Perhaps a brotherly or friendly slap on the back, a heavy meal, and a lot of drinks. There would also be butchering of animals and the meat would be distributed to loyal supporters.
Other favors would certainly be solicited. The favorite is participation in a government contract or project. The politician will get his share up front. The supporter/contractor would get his returns after the project is done.
Another popular choice of supporters is to be recommended to a job in government or get a promotion from an existing one.
Both ways, some preparations are required.
If you are a contractor, thus, hankering to undertake projects, you need substantial capital. Not just for the project but also the grease money for the politician, to be shelled out even before breaking ground. A mobilization fund can be collected and performance can be progressively billed but the bulk of the contract value can only be paid after the project is done.
Some prior investments should have been done though such as for heavy equipment and required real estate for offices, storage, depots, etc.
It all boils down to having capital.
For those hankering for jobs or promotion in the government service, the preparation is simple but can be difficult to satisfy. It only involves having the educational qualifications and relevant experience.
If you don’t have these, say goodbye to the chance to exploit your connection with the winning candidate.**
